In addition to disease and infection, pigeons can also bring you parasites, ticks, and mites. This usually happens when the pigeons have established a nest and have create a large mess of droppings in an area. This is a breeding ground for all kinds of parasites and pests. A dead pigeon is even more of a breeding ground for pests and flies. Have fun with your friends by playing a collection of excellent two-player games! PETA threatened to press charges against Wimbledon officials for hiring marksmen to kill pigeons that were dive-bombing the courts; Wimbledon spokesmen promise to disarm.

30-Second Summary

In response to threats from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), The All England Club, which hosts the Wimbledon tennis tournament, has vowed to modify its treatment of pigeons.
Normally, Wimbledon officials use two trained hawks to keep pigeons off the main tennis courts. This year, however, pigeons have overwhelmed the hawks, “dive-bombing” players on the courts.
To address the issue quickly, Wimbledon officials hired snipers to shoot the birds.
When British newspapers reported the shootings, PETA representatives sent Wimbledon officials a letter threatening to press charges against the organization for violating the 2006 Animal Welfare act.
“Since you last updated your protocol for dealing with pigeons, a law was passed—the Animal Welfare Act 2006—that you must not know about. … Lethal control can only be used if the target species presents a demonstrable risk to public health and safety,” Bruce Friedrich, head of PETA in the U.K. wrote.
Wimbledon spokespeople responded with an agreement to stop shooting the birds. Despite the response, PETA may still press charges.

The head of PETA in London has announced that Wimbledon organizers have promised to stop shooting pigeons. The All England Club in southwest London uses two trained hawks to deter pigeons that bother players and game-goers. But when the hawks failed to keep pigeons at bay, marksmen were called in by the Club to shoot the pigeons. “Shooting pigeons dead is no more acceptable than doing the same to dogs or cats,” PETA argued.

Background: Wimbledon’s pigeon problem

Last year The New York Times reported on pigeon control at Wimbledon, profiling Wayne Davis, the hawk trainer whose job it was to guarantee pigeon-clear skies at The All England Club. Pigeons have always been an issue at Wimbledon: “In the old, old days, they probably used to shoot them,” said last year’s Wimbledon spokesman Johnny Perkins. “But in these touchy feely times, they probably decided that wasn’t the best option. This seems to be the best compromise, really.”

Wimbledon officials responded to 2008 threat of pigeons after receiving numerous complaints from players who had been “dive-bombed” by the birds, The Independent reports. Players also encountered bee infestations on the Wimbledon courts this year.

On Tuesday, PETA demanded that officials at Wimbledon stop shooting pigeons, citing the Animal Welfare Act, which states that a property owner must use lethal control to deter animals only as a last resort, and only when the animal represents an obvious threat to civilian health and safety. 'We believe that the club should be prosecuted for cruelty to animals.' PETA stated in a letter to Wimbledon officials.
